LE GRIZZ 50
50 miles 7 minutes and one shot blok at a time

My basic race strategy was a 7:1 "Gallowalk" and one Cliff Shot Blok per mile. This tedious routine got me through though. I finished in 10 hours and 10-15 minutes (I really don't know for sure).

Shoes: Montrail Hardrocks (1-36) and Mizuno Wave Creation (36-50)

Background: after DNFing the Ice Age 50 at mile 37 in May 2006, I've had my heart set on completing a 50 miler. I'm not sure when I decided to do this particular race but I do know that I was one of the very first people to register.

Ironically, I was one of the very last people to make it to the race. My girlfriend Leanne picked me up early and we headed towards the race start. Somewhere in Columbia Falls on Highway 2, which is a major 4-lane highway, there was a very large animal running down the middle of the road. It was a large donkey!!! We stopped to find help - the donkey seemed frightened and I was afraid someone would hit it (and frankly, the car would fare worse than the donkey). We made various efforts to find help but without success. The donkey eventually left the road and we gave up. I'm sure the donkey found its way home.

It was still dark as we made our way to the start. The sun was beginning to barely show itself behind the craggy mountains of Glacier and the smoother profile of the mountains in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. As we turned one corner, we saw a shooting star.

Finally, we made it to "Area 51" where the race would start (mile 51 on the Forest Service mileposts). The race director was in his car coming the other way and said "you must be Danielle." I was the last person to arrive and would have to get my number from him at the starting line. This was no trouble at all. I even had time to introduce myself to Kendra Borgmann, who would place second overall (she was only a few minutes behind the winner dude) and first among the women and very nearly smash the course record. The starting line was at a Canadian flag and there was a sign for "seeded runners." This was amusing since there were 91 people or so who started the race.

Pat Caffrey, the longtime race director, gave last minute announcements including instructions to think positive thoughts during a mile that would be marked "Ann's mile" - Ann was the wife of a local man who ran this race last year at age 80. She passed in June. We were reminded that our loved ones are the only reason we're able to do this stuff. He said we could feel sorry for ourselves during the other 49 miles. Then, rather suddenly, he held up this enormous rifle and with the look of a madman fired a very loud shot. OMG what have I gotten myself into this time????

Miles 1-10 - these miles flew by. Leanne jumped in around mile 5 and ran with me until about mile 16. I felt a little stressed though because I was tired from the beginning. However, I was lucid enough this early to know that I ran the first ten miles in 1:45. That's about all I know about pace for the whole race I tried to stay in the moment and enjoy the spectacular scenery but I was nervous. I had a lot of running ahead of me.

Miles 10-25 - these were the hardest miles for me during this whole race. I wanted to cry just thinking about how far I had to run. In addition, my hip flexors were already cramping and I was tired HOW pray tell was I going to do this??? Deb jumped in around mile 10 and ran until around mile 20 and I was just sort of cranky. I tried to stay in the moment and enjoy the scenery but all I felt was stress. I just needed to make it to mile 25 and then at least I knew it was ok if it started to hurt.

Miles 25-30 - I started to feel better. Rebecca, the founder of our running club, ran miles 20-30 with me and was at one point talking about other ultras we were going to run later. I think I might have informed her of my planned retirement from running. Meanwhile, Leanna hooked me up with water and V-8 juice or whatever struck my fancy every 3-4 miles. Each five miles I got an S-cap and I greatly looked forward to those. Oh and the Tylenol. I love me some Tylenol. At mile 30, I think I was already somehow behind my goal time by 15-20 minutes but didn't care anymore. I just needed to finish. I tried not to dilly dally during aid stops but I always do.

Miles 30-36 - Ruth jumped in at mile 30 and was a very calming influence. She is very sweet and encouraging. She told me about her new puppy and I dragged myself along. These miles were fairly calm and I was finally able to genuinely enjoy the scenery and be in the moment. I love how she says "good hill good hill" at every hill. It makes me smile.

Mile 36 - this is where we hit pavement. The remainder of the race is on pavement sauf the bushwhack at the end. I change shoes and sock and grab my iPod. I was going to have to be rude but I needed music. Somewhere Tom had hopped in, who would run the rest of the race with me. He was the perfect person for this job. We took off and between the music and shoes that weighed less than half (it seemed) than my trail shoes, I started flying. Tom and Ruth were both with me at this point and remarked that I had really started running faster. It's funny how when you're exhausted (or intoxicated) song lyrics take on new special meaning.

Listen, listen: This is mark I cannot place This is the wish I dare not leave Time uncovers what is keeping still I unaware move against my will

Simon says, "pass on by" Passions wane, stragglers weep Hungers fight Here, things are We'll never get that far Close enough to die a time or two or three

Who needs pain to survive? I need pain to change my life

I fly with the aid of my music. I think to myself "this music tastes soooooo good." Hmmm guess I'm a little delirious.

Mile 38 - I believe this was Ann's mile. Somewhere around here. I thought about loved ones and how good life is and then had to stop because it was making me weepy. Weepy and running don't mix.

Mile 40 - Yeah!!! At this point, I'm just knocking off single digits. Happy day! I made it! I keep flying. . .

Mile 43 - Leanne looks very worried. "Are you feeling ok?" "Yeah I feel fine! Do I look bad?" "Yeah you look really pale." Well, I don't have that much further so who cares.

Mile 47 - At this point in the race, we cross the Hungry Horse Dam. Tom and I stop to check it out and hang over the edge. Bad idea. I get total vertigo. I feel very dizzy and want to throw up. Suddenly the "highlight" of the race becomes what feels like a scary swinging bridge suspended thousands of feet up. I just need to get across. I do and I don't throw up.

Mile 48 - all my friends join me. Deb, Tom, Ruth, Rebecca and Leanne are all running with me. We see John drive by -- who graciously volunteered his day to serve as Grizz Patrol. I'm oblivious listening to my iPod, which at this point has become my life support.

Mile 49.something - there's this bushwhack straight up a dirt hill (no trail) where I have to grab trees and pull myself up. Luckily, Leanne was behind me (I think?) to catch me when I nearly fell backwards and gently push me up.

Mile 50 - my friends ran ahead and made an arch with their arms for me to run through. I was laughing so hard it's ridiculous. Only they could make it so funny. I'm done!!!

I guess it sounds like I didn't really enjoy myself and I guess I can't lie and say it was fun. It was hard and it was far. I'm glad I did it and I feel a great sense of accomplishment. Most of all I feel so honored to have received so much help from my friends. I've only been here ten months and have already made the kind of friends you hope to make in a lifetime. I am so blessed.

I wrote this yesterday. Now, Monday, I'm already excited to run another one. And it seemed more fun in hindsight than I thought yesterday. Next summer I'd like to work on my trail running skillz and attempt Devil's Backbone and Elkhorn. In 2009, maybe 100??? We shall see. ;)

Don't get me Grizz!!!!

Tomorrow I'll attempt to move myself 50 miles at Le Grizz 50. I'm really nervous although I feel as if though I should be adequately trained. Please send good energy vibes to me tomorrow. I'll really need them!

BIG SKY AND BUTTE
or I survived

This weekend I was in Big Sky, which is a beautiful ski resort near Bozeman. It was the firm "retreat" which involved business talk and a lot of alcohol. I am hoping that I can detox by next weekend, which is Le Grizz. I didn't run all weekend and while the view outside my window was amazing (see below) I didn't really get to enjoy the surroundings. I do think I scraped through the weekend without totally humiliating myself though.

Perhaps the best part was that on the way home I was able to convince my boss to take me to Butte. After seeing the Daley Show special on Butte I needed to see the Berkley Pit for myself. And, for those of you not in the know, Butte has a very unique reputation in Montana and is sort of infamous. We also went to Pork Chop Johns where I had the oddest grilled cheese ever. But I enjoyed it very much.

Amusingly, we drove by this sign that said "Need People to Fight, No experience necessary, $50" or something along those lines. I took a picture but you can't read it so I won't bother posting it.

We also drove through Deer Lodge which is where the prison is, which prompted a vivid dream last night that I was in prison. Except my cell had beautiful wood parquet floors and a spa bathtub. Don't know what that means.

SNOW (!!!) AND ELTON JOHN

Ted and I went and saw Elton John last night. It's surreal seing a legend and seeing a legend like Elton John in a small auditorium in Montana. It was so fun. And it has started snowing on the tops of the mountains. Soon I'll be able to run in my new special running showshoes!!! Yippppeeee!!!

So should we have a betting pool for when Joanna's baby is coming???

If memory serves, Joanna could give birth any day now!!!

I'm all packed for the 57K Iris and I are doing this Saturday. It's totally unsupported so we have to bring everything. By bringing my little hydration pack I don't have room for extra socks or a compass. I will be ok, right? I'm also hydrating for the race as you can see. Red wine is delicious.

I have:
Tylenol
S-Caps (electrolytes)
first aid
headlamp
body glide
bear spray
steri-pen (water purification)
aqua vira tablets (backup water purification)
camera
rain jacket
space blanket
about 3500 calories worth of food (trail mix, cliff shots, ProBars, gels)
2 L of water (I might also carry a bottle)

If you think I'm missing something tell me please thank you.
MISC STUFF

BAD PUPPY!!! SONJA IS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE.

I made gaitors for trail running! I made them for my friend Iris. I hope she likes them.

Ted and I went to our friends Eric and Krista's lake house on Rogers lake last night for some Labor Day weekend beer drinking and eating. It's a gorgeous little area and it was very pleasant.

Hinterland Who's Who: The Black Bear

Important information about black bears -- brought to you from our friends up north

Sunday, August 26, 2007

my running group did a trail run today -- we ran from Foys Lake to Blacktail Mountain. My Garmin said 14.5 but it seemed longer. Anyhow, we climbed from around 3300 feet to nearly 7000 feet. I was tiiiiired!!!

Just a picture from last week when it was still smokey. The smoke seems to be gone finally thanks to some desperately needed rain!!!

Monday, August 20, 2007

I think Gretchen now thinks she's a husky mountain dog. It will be a rude awakening to return to the city. The air will seem so clean and clear there. (This day in the park was possibly the smokiest it has been this summer, yuck!)

Cheryl has been here this week and we went rafting with "Feddy" and some Spokane people. Cheryl was trying not to lose a contact. She says. :p

WOAH BEAR!!! WOAH!!! Ted and I had a lovely time this weekend in South Lake Tahoe. Mesh and Josh from Chicago wed in front of the bluest lake I've ever seen. Little did I realize it used to be bluer. We had a great time but it's nice to come home to a place that is, in my opinion, just as beautiful.
Ted and I also celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary there. It seems appropriate to attend a wedding your anniversary weekend.

This weekend Ted and I hiked at Holland Lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The hike was short -- to a waterfall. We had a really nice day. I like nice days. Unfortunately though the area is ablaze and everything is sorta smokey and campfirey. Makes my dead yard seem like not a big deal in comparison.

My friend Catherine and I went to the rodeo Friday night in C-Falls (Columbia Falls for those not in the know). It was "Heritage Days" and so we thought we'd check it out. I was not as distressed as I thought I would be -- no animals were harmed and it was pretty amusing to be honest. Lots of cowboys and cowgirls and tourists. We had a drink at the Blue Moon afterwards -- a place that had always scared me. It was pretty fun.

Grandma Edythe passed away early this morning. Not everyone is lucky enough to have had such an amazingly cool grandmother -- one who wore bright velour tracksuits with matching shoes, headbands and lipstick -- who celebrated diversity and preached tolerance -- who taught to "save a little spend a little" -- who took a solo Spring Break vacation to Mexico in her 80s -- who apparently attempted stand-up comedy at her Senior Center and taught (or took) Spanish and played tambourine in her band -- who gave birth to one of the most amazing men I've ever known. . . the list goes on and on. Rest in peace Grandma Edythe. If there is a heaven I'm sure there's a spot in the funky urban section of heaven waiting for you.

do you think this guy can make a player out of this girl?
I didn't have my camera, so you're going to have to pretend this guy, who is actually a pet of the Swope Park people in Kansas City, is a little bigger and there are four of them standing in a row -- then you will visualize what I saw on my run this morning. Sonja was with me and didn't even notice the four very large turkey vultures staring us down as we ran by. I would swear they were 3 feet tall but according to the trusty interweb they aren't *that* big.

Yesterday I did a 20 mile trail run/hike in the park -- I took the shuttle to the Gunsight Pass trailhead and ran/hiked to the Lake McDonald lodge where my car was waiting for me. It was perhaps the most amazing and beautiful run I've ever done. Here is the full set of pictures.

Good morning!!! I go to KCMO tomorrow -- it was 55 this morning. I think I will miss Montana.

Sunday, July 01, 2007

This is the view from the trail we ran today. We did about 12 miles. It was a gorgeous morning.

Friday, June 29, 2007

It's finally summer. It has been hot in the afternoons! But it's still pretty. I can do hot here better than hot in Chicago.

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

I forgot to mention the most important event of the summer -- David and Ellen came to visit. I think I mentioned that they inspired me to restart the blog. We had so much fun and I wish they lived here!

This is a consumer confession. I am very sad that we don't have AT&T service here and that I can't have an IPhone until it becomes mainstream. I should be happy since I can't afford it and since prices will invariably come down in the next few years before it's available in Montana. But all this iPhone hype is a reminder that no matter how hard I try (ok I don't try very hard) to break my love of gadgets, I am a gadget girl and I want all the new cool toys.

This weekend Ted and I volunteered on the Dive team at Ironman Coeur d'Alene. We had an awesome campsite on the lake -- only the group site was available when I went to reserve a site online so we had this huge campground to ourselves basically. It was beautiful!

We had a blast volunteering. I had the opportunity to watch the swim portion of the race from below the water -- it was incredible. Thankfully no one sank thus requiring my assistance. It was really neat and made me want to do another one. I'm thinking that perhaps I will consider Ironman Wisconsin 2008. I want to volunteer again next year at CDA so I won't be signing up.

Friday, June 22, 2007

I finally went to HuHot. No, not HuHa but HuHot. ;)

It's my birthday today!!! Ted gave me flowers and a beer stein this morning. He said it was too early for me to have beer though. This morning Leanne, Hunter and Sonja and I did about 5 trail miles at the "Pig Farm" -- then she bought me a sticky bun and coffee. This day has been great! Here's a blurry picture from my cellphone.

Thursday, June 21, 2007

OK, so since the entire Woodbury clan blogs like rock stars I'm inspired to revive this. So what have we been up to? Well, I ran Boston and Coeur d'Alene marathons. We've been hanging out with friends and I will post picture from David and Ellen's visit as soon as I can pirate them from David. This weekend we're volunteering at the CDA Ironman and will camp and celebrate my 32nd in style :)

Zeke and Danni running :-) Last week it was pretty cold and a face mask was definitely needed. But it's basically very pleasant for running (with yak traks and trail shoes).
