Saturday, to mix things up a little, Iris and I went to Missoula to the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area to run. Missoula has a pretty extensive trail system just a few miles from town -- much of it is flat but some of the trails really gain in elevation. We did some of both. The weather was perfect. I even got a little sunburnt. We ran 20 miles (I ran 10 beforehand to make 30) and had a great time. Then we went shopping. REI is having its 70th anniversary sale so I cleaned house at REI and Iris purchased a Garmin GPS running watch -- a birthday present from her parents.

Sunday, the group ran at Herron Park. It was Iris' birthday -- HAPPY BIRTHDAY IRIS! -- and it was another perfect day. Sharon brought her dogs, who were very cute. I managed 20 miles, feeling better and stronger than I had the day before. I realized at the end of our run though, that at Western States I will start before I did my pre-Missoula 10 miles (I did that at 6 a.m., the race starts at 5 a.m.), be running the whole time we drove to Missoula, the whole time we ran 20 miles, the whole time we were shopping, the whole time we drove home, the whole time I slept and nearly the whole time I did my Sunday run. On the one hand I'm excited for the adventure, but on the other I just have no clue how it will go down and it might not be pretty. To put it gently. . .

The Rattlesnake! If I had still been in Missoula I would have gone with you. Maybe because I grew up in it, but it's the most special place to me on Planet Earth. Looks like you hit snow before you could get very far? Now that we've found a house I can catch up on my favorite commenter a little bit. :) Craig liked your comment about not having second thoughts about your new last name in front of your in laws. ;)
I will die if this gets posted 3 times, since that is how many times I've tried. This time I'll take out the long URL to my Rattlesnake rambles I put in earlier!
So glad to hear about the rest of your Sunday run. You definitely seem to have the mental stamina to finish WS. Thanks for the birtday wishes and the Rattlesnake adventure!
Hi Danni!
Thanks so much for all the nice things you've said over on my blog. You're an awesome girl, you know that? ;)
You had a big training weekend, yippee! Good job gettin' er' dun'. Cool you went to the Rattlesnake area in Missoula, I've hiked there only once in some really bad weather.
Oh and I wanted to comment on the fact that you roll your Nike tempo shorts down. I do too and my friends always make fun of me. I claim that it's because I have a short torso, is that the case for you too?
Have a fabulous week!
Meghan
Kendrarara, I'd love to see the Rattlesnake rambles. . . glad you found a house and are getting settled in.
Iris, hope the best of your birthday was fun.
Meghan, I have a very short torso (and short legs and all that too) and also find that the waist band irritates my chub less if it's rolled down :-)
The weekend looks great, and I roll ALL my shorts down, though I have a long torso 9and short legs:)).
Nice weekend mileage. You got nothing to worry about Danni. You planning on doing anything for heat adaption?
JR
Olga, you are blessed with a long bod!
JR - I plan to hit the sauna starting late May or early June. It will become my lunchtime project. I've been reading the Badwater forums and it sounds like Lisa Bliss did the sauna thing so if it works for her maybe it will work for me. My gym has an infrared sauna that I will set up camp in. Let me know if you have ideas.
I didn't think there was a big difference between active heat training and sedentary heat training but according to this link there is. http://www.dclundell.net/running/info/heataccl.html
The sauna at my gym is way to hot to do anything but just sit there and bake. I remember reading about Lisa using the infrared sauna thingy. Let me know how it goes. It only takes like 3 weeks for most of the adaptions to occur so sounds like you will be right on schedule.
JR
I'm going to have to just sit and bake -- MAYBE do some situps but probably just bake. It's snowing right now as I write this -- I don't think I'll be finding a way to do active baking.
Maybe you can talk to someone at your gym and see about setting up a bicycle in the sauna.
