Time to prepare for winter. Yeah, I said that.

I'm definitely not running the Bear 100 or doing any more races in 2012 that involve travel.  It's possible I'll run Le Grizz again for fun, but that depends on various factors.  Anyhow, my goal, odd as it might seem given how active I am (or, rather, appear to be based on my selective social-media sharing), is to just regain basic fitness.

Kent, Amber, me and Rhino in the Jewel Basin last Sunday
I can hike many miles but I'm not really even in running shape anymore.  I've been really lazy during the work week and haven't been running.  I have, of course, been a glutton (big surprise) and have gained some weight.  I feel like garbage.

Thus, starting yesterday, I'm just returning to running with an eye towards resuming lifting again and being substantially more mindful in my diet (especially, ahem, liquid calories).  All I want really is to return to my fitness level of last winter, which wasn't anything special but was good enough for me.  Allison just posted pictures from last winter on Facebook and the first thing I noticed was how much better I looked than I do now.  Not that's totally about vanity, but maybe some... anyhow, sort of a boring proclamation, especially coming from someone who pretty much always claims this goal, but it's just part of the yearly cycle of me (get fit, get fat, get fit, get fat...).

Dude, if I had what you have around me, I wouldn't be lifting...though I would do lotsa running in addition to all the hiking. So, lets get vain and watch that food (liquid or otherwise). Just imagine what I feel when I look at my last summers photos...you know, those from before the body show...oh, crap!

Isn't selective social-media sharing the best? It makes me look like a far better parent than I actually am. : )

Um, didn't you just run a 50 miler? What part of not in running shape includes that? :)

Lalalalalalawinterlalalalalalala I can't hear you!

If you run Le Griz, that'd be great because we could party like indulgent rockstars together afterward. ;) Oh wait, this post is about not being an indulgent rock star.

I love you!

Olga, you still look great. We are harsh judges of ourselves, eh?

Kate, even if you do nothing else other than that you blog about that's incredibly impressive parenting.

Mary, that was in June two months ago :p

Meghan, I love you too and of course one parties like an indulgent rock star after running 100. But I won't run if you need/want crew which facilitates faster running in that race. Then again Dave could probably crew too.

I mean running 50.

You totally don't have to crew me if you want to run! Then we could be indulgent together afterward! I don't need a crew as I'm sure aid stations are great. Plus, if you were riding a bike next to me, you'd probably say things that would make me laugh so hard that I would have to stop running. In reality, either way is great, you should do whatever your little heart desires. ;) It'll be a fun weekend!

Yay for winter! Tis the season! As for you not being in shape, I'm with Mary — I don't buy it for a second.

I'm super excited for all the possibilities of winter. I may try for a more focused approach to training as well so I can shoot for a few fitness goals: a ~5:30 50K in January, test my speed limit on the Susitna 100 even if it means blowing up spectacularly, and do a week-long self-supported winter bike tour in Alaska. I may have to do actual speed work, but I'm liking the prospect of thinking ambitiously in my winter goals, both fitness and writing.

First I have to get this little 100-mile speed-hike in Europe out of the way. Ha! I'm super nervous about UTMB, moreso than I even was before the 2011 Susitna. There are a lot of unknown physical challenges out there, and I'm not even sure how I'll react. I love it, though.

I think I feel the same way you do. I am in great hiking shape but struggle to lose weight and the running has definitely nose-dived. I thought my fitness was really suffering but I just went on a week-long backpacking trip that felt like a stroll in the park so maybe I am in better shape than I look?
I'm trying to settle for good hiking shape for now and build back into running slowly as the weather cools off. I always run much better in winter anyway!
